TikTok Grants Viewers Authority to Limit Artificial Intelligence-Made Media in Personal Streams

The platform is rolling out a updated setting that allows them to cut down on the quantity of artificial intelligence-produced media appearing in their timelines. This step comes as the company disclosed that it now features more than 1 thousand million AI-generated clips.

Pilot Phase and Launch

The new functionality is undergoing trials over the following weeks before a widespread launch. This advancement comes amid a rise in AI content, spurred by emerging AI video creators.

AI Content on Other Platforms

It has been noted that approximately 10% of the most rapidly expanding channels on a competing service primarily display AI-generated videos. A large amount of this output is classified as mass-produced AI material, a label for substandard, factory-style content that is typically illogical or surreal.

“We know from our community that a lot of users like content made with AI tools, from digital art to informative clips, and we want to offer the community the option to increase or decrease of that, depending on their own likes,” said a spokesperson.

Scale of AI Content

The service shared that there are now 1.3bn videos on its app identified as artificially created. Collectively, more than 100 m media items are uploaded to the app daily, making AI-generated material a relatively small portion of its complete catalog.

Customizing Your Feed

Members will be able to limit or boost the level of artificial media they watch by using the “manage topic” setting in the app and choosing the AI content topic. Further subjects that are already be modified under the setting include politics, clothing, cosmetics, and movement.

Content Labeling and Policies

TikTok’s guidelines oblige content makers to tag “realistic” AI-made content, and it bans dangerous deepfakes of celebrities or critical incidents. Any realistic AI-generated clip that is not labeled can be removed under its user guidelines.

Furthermore, the service will henceforth attach an AI-generated tag to content created with its own AI tools, or identified by an cross-platform project for identifying AI-generated material. This step is intended to stop users from attempting to evade the tagging system.

Educational Initiatives

The platform is furthermore establishing a $2 million AI literacy fund for specialists and organizations to develop learning resources about using AI responsibly. This project will assist educational bodies dedicated to educating programming and robotics.

Platform Protection

The video-sharing app has justified its moderation strategy, during discussion over proposals to cut jobs for hundreds of content moderators in Britain. The company is expected to eliminate a significant number of roles in its trust and safety division in London, with labor groups and internet security professionals voicing alarm that people are being substituted by machine-led review.

A senior executive clarified that staff-based oversight would continue to be important, but artificial intelligence can protect employees by filtering out the most harmful content prior to it has to be seen by humans. TikTok announced a notable drop in explicit and harmful content handled by safety staff over the previous year due to intervention by its AI tools.

“We think that it’s essential to combine staff and AI to ensure user safety,” the executive stated. “We’ll have staff as part of that process, but we further consider it’s extremely critical to minimize viewing of harmful content as quickly as possible, which is where a significant AI assistance is proving valuable work at speed.”
